But understanding how caffeine works in the body, how it changes the brain over time, and why your primary care doctor might ask about it can help you make more informed choices about your daily intake.
How Caffeine Works in Your Body
Caffeine doesn't give you energy. Instead, it blocks the chemical signal that tells your brain to slow down, which is why a cup of coffee can feel like a second wind even though your body's energy reserves haven't changed.
Throughout the day, your brain produces a compound called adenosine. As adenosine accumulates, it binds to receptors in the brain and promotes drowsiness. This is your body's built-in way of tracking how long you've been awake and signaling that it's time to rest. A single cup of coffee can feel like a jolt for someone who rarely drinks it. A daily coffee drinker might barely notice the effects of their second or third cup.
Caffeine's half-life averages about five hours, meaning half the caffeine from a cup of coffee is still active in your system five hours after you drink it. However, that range can vary from person to person. Factors like pregnancy, certain medications, and individual liver metabolism can stretch caffeine's half-life well beyond five hours, while smoking and higher altitudes can shorten it to as little as 90 minutes. For someone whose body metabolizes caffeine more slowly, an afternoon coffee is still active in their system at bedtime.
Even when caffeine doesn't prevent sleep, it can change sleep quality. Caffeine reduces the proportion of deep sleep and REM sleep your brain cycles through during the night, so you wake up feeling less rested even after a full, uninterrupted night of sleep. That unrefreshing sleep can lead to a self-perpetuating cycle: more fatigue the next morning, more caffeine to compensate throughout the day, and another night of shallow sleep.

When caffeine leaves the body, all of those extra adenosine receptors the brain created are now open and unblocked. Adenosine floods in, producing effects opposite to those of caffeine. Headaches, fatigue, irritability, and brain fog are the most common withdrawal symptoms, and they tend to start within 24 to 48 hours after you last consumed caffeine.
The degree to which these changes affect you depends on how much you consume, how consistent your intake is, and your individual physiology. A morning cup of coffee and an afternoon soft drink put far less strain on these systems than six espresso shots spread across a 14-hour day.
